10 companies you should visit at Hannover Messe 2017

Hannover Messe 2017

We have a live blog page on Visaya Solutions, follow us there!
Yeah, Hannover Messe 2017! Spring break for automation pros! Okay, not really, especially since some of y’all don’t even do spring break. Anyway, you already know we’ll pack our bags and go cover the entire fair, from the 24th to the 28th of April.
We’ve checked out all the companies who said they’ll come play. We hope to cover most of them to keep you updated on new trends and pending launches and to bring you news about process automation in general. Furthermore, to help you optimize your time during the fair, we got the idea to create a list of 10 companies you should visit at Hannover Messe 2017.
In these first 10 process automation companies, you’ll find field instrumentation, solutions, and control systems aplenty. Of course, you know we’ll talk about the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0, too. Can’t shut us up on those!
So are you ready for Hannover Messe 2017? If not, then read on and you will be! Stay tuned to Visaya; we’ll keep the info flowing from now through the fair.
See you there! #VisayaHM17 #HM17

ABB

This company always brings a lot of solutions for different segments. You can read our review of the CoriolisMaster FCB450 to get up to speed on one of ABB’s hottest devices. At the fair, you should also see ABB’s other products, like the company’s latest solutions to device management through fieldbuses and wireless.
The ABB reps also plan to cover the topic of industrial energy efficiency. As always, we must improve performance and save money in our plants, and you can have a beer or coffee with some of the people ready to make that happen.
You can find ABB in hall 11, stands A35 and D44.

Burket Fluid Control System

We haven’t covered this company yet on Visaya, but we’ll review its products soon. Furthermore, we’ll stop by the Burket stand and chat with the reps. They should have a bunch of instrumentation products, like flow meters, level transmitters, and pressure devices.
I suggest checking out the FLOWave, an interesting meter that follows high hygiene standards to measure low and non-conductive liquids, with no parts inside the tube. The FLOWave can bring a lot of benefits to your application.
Burket will have stand G16 in hall 9.

Emerson Automation Solutions

We go on so much about Emerson, you’d think we worked for them. (Note: We don’t.) That’s because Emerson consistently puts out outstanding solutions for all kinds of applications. We recently published an article about Emerson’s IIoT presentation at its annual user exchange, if you want to take a look.
At Hannover Messe 2017, Emerson will have its huge wireless portfolio, along with IIoT solutions based on operational performance, such as process production and energy management.
I vouch for the Micro Motion 5700 and the Rosemount 2140 as good products to check out at Emerson’s stand, as I’m sure the reps will bring these two to the fair. They also have system solutions and plant asset management, so you’ll spend some time going through everything!
You can find Emerson Automation Solutions in hall 15, stand G43 and hall 11, stand D44.

Endress+Hauser

I know you know Endress+Hauser, right? This company provides excellent instrumentation solutions, and it launched some really cool news this year and last year, so check that out too.
If nothing else, you should see the flow meter portfolio. You can check out the new Proline 300/500, a product with nice features like Heartbeat technology and wireless communication. And the FMR10/FMR20 level transmitters have cool Bluetooth communication and nice setups for fairly low costs. I’ll bet you’ll see an IIoT presentation from this company, but I’m just guessing.
Head to hall 11, stands C43, C44, and E55 to find Endress+Hauser.

IFM

Another strong company in field instrumentation and automation components, you’ve surely heard about it. We haven’t reviewed any products from IFM but we hope to do so soon.
We like the SM series magnetic inductive flow meter, a compact, simple, and efficient device. While you’re there, you can ask the reps for a shorter name next time as well. Just kidding. They should have plenty of products for level and pressure measurement too. Ask about their thoughts on IO-Link, as they seem eager to talk about it.
You can find IFM in hall 9, stands D06 and D36.

JUMO

This company has a huge range of instrumentation solutions, with devices for temperature, pressure, level, flow, liquid analysis, and more. It also has solutions to complement the instrumentation portfolio, like control and recording.
JUMO’s Hannover Messe 2017 message this year — “Smart sensors for the factories of tomorrow and future-oriented systems” — sounds good! The reps will bring new temperature and sensor devices based on the company’s IO-Link portfolio, so you can check those out too.
JUMO has stand C28 in hall 11.

Mettler-Toledo

This company produces analysis products like density meters, thermal analyses, refractometers, and others. We’d like to point out the pH package, which has a benchtop pH meter, portable pH meter, and software.
We have yet to cover analysis on Visaya, but we’ll get there eventually. In the meantime, we’ll talk to the reps and check out the products at Hannover Messe to keep you updated.
You can find Mettler-Toledo in hall 8, stand D20.

Pepperl+Fuchs

Yeah, you know Pepperl+Fuchs. It offers a lot of products for connectivity and fieldwork, and now it owns the brand ECOM, bringing mobility to the portfolio.
You should have a peek at the new ECOM products. I’ll bet you’ll see the new portfolio and how the products can support your process. You’ll also see industrial sensors and other instrumentation to provide connectivity in your plant.
Pepperl+Fuchs will be in hall 9 at stands D06, D68, and D76.

SICK

Yep, another cool company! This one already has presentations for Hannover Messe’s key topics nailed down, so you should keep an eye on it.
The first topic is networking and seamless integration. The second is data sovereignty and security. Last but not least, they’ll address applications, where to implement these new solutions in your process. Pretty slick, SICK!
You can find SICK in hall 9, stand F18 and hall P11, stand C20.

Yokogawa

Finally (only because they come last in the alphabet, we promise), we have our Japanese friends! You already know the company and its huge portfolio covering flow, temperature, pressure, device management, and control systems.
When you visit the Yokogawa crew, and check out the ROTAMASS Total Insight that we reviewed here at Visaya. You should take a glance at the huge wireless portfolio and control system structures too.
Yokogawa has stand D68 in hall 9 and D44 in hall 11.

Conclusion

And there you have it! The must-see companies at Hannover Messe and the products and presentations to check out. If you plan to go to this fair, then you should at least stop by the stands listed here.
If you are from one of these companies or if you know other cool products, please leave a comment below and let’s talk!
You ready? We are! #VisayaHM17

Product Review: AMS Trex Communicator

Content from: Visaya.Solutions

AMS Trex Communicator

Yep, another Emerson product, the AMS Trex communicator! I promise, these guys don’t pay us. They should, though. #PayUs
Seriously, we talk about Emerson a lot because they launch a lot of new products, and we like to talk about new products. Makes sense, right?
In the digital field of the automation market, Emerson makes a pretty good impression. But have they got the most innovative device?
I’m here to spill my thoughts about the new AMS Trex Communicator and put in my vote!

Whatcha got there?

The AMS Trex communicator is an evolution of the handheld. You have the same functions for setting up HART and FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices, but now you can power the devices using a single cable and check the field network diagnostics.
The Trex™ follows the market trend toward bigger devices, with a 5.7 inch touchscreen. However, weighing in at a chunky 1.33 kilograms versus the 0.75 kilogram of the 475 makes it one of the heavier options on the market.

On the plus side, the menu design and navigation are really cool! The  Emerson crew obviously keep an eye on marketing trends, as you can see in the menu.
You have the option of two different versions. The simple one only offers the configuration input without the power supply. The other gives you a power supply, configuration input, and current measurement! Although different options aren’t really practical, and sometimes you need to change the cables for your application.
Maybe a software feature rather than a physical change in the next version?
The design is a mix of a tablet and a brick, but it’s not bad. We already mentioned its size and the weight, and I’ll skip commenting on the  resistive touchscreen. I really hope to find a different display than they used on the 475.
The battery hurts the score, though. Just 8 hours of operating time against the 20 hours of the 475? I thought the extra weight was because of the battery! If not, then what makes it so heavy?

What can it do?

You can set up HART devices and FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices! Woo! The product offers a rich database and you probably have all the device descriptions already loaded. If you chose the Plus version, you can power up the field device using a single cable. Sort of. You need a strange combination to power a FF field device, but hey. Engineering adjusts, am I right?
Take a look at the pic below and tell me you won’t lose those red bits. I’m 100 percent sure you will.

The HART and FF diagnostics are the strongest points here. Having diagnostics in your handheld helps tremendously. You can check the FF segment with it, and the level of information it gives helps a lot to diagnose problems.
The AMS Trex communicator also offers wireless, Bluetooth, and USB connections to transfer data. Great to have the flexibility of more than one type of communication.

Why should I care?

Good question. The Trex™ is an excellent tool, but it’s not as innovative as they want us to think. The market has a bunch of devices like it. Nonetheless, as a HART and FF handheld, it’s still a nice tool.

If you have an FF network, the Trex™ can make segment diagnosis in the field easy. I like the single-cable feature too. Usually we have to set up a FF device in the workshop, so this eliminates all that mess!
Now, if you have only HART devices or a structure already set up in your workshop, then the Trex™ will feel more like a luxury choice. Simpler and cheaper handhelds on the market can set up and run diagnostics of HART devices and sometimes FF devices just as well.
Overall, it’s an okay choice. Although I didn’t find a video about the single cable for FF devices, if you want to learn more about the Trex™ in general, watch this video:

Product Review: ROTAMASS Total Insight

ROTAMASS Total Insight

Yokogawa is launching a new Coriolis series, and we’re here to take a look and tell you what we think. Enjoy the read and draw your own conclusions about ROTAMASS Total Insight!
Rotamass total insight
ROTAMASS Total Insight Multi-Tier Series of Coriolis Flow Meters – Courtesy of Yokogawa

Whatcha got there?

The ROTAMASS Total Insight is the newest line of Coriolis meters from Yokogawa. After years of the same old model, they’ve finally put out a product with some new technology built in!
The new ROTAMASS comes with a lot of promises and features for us to check out. You probably don’t need everything they offer, but hey. Great to have options, right?
So the line has six devices, each applying to different segments and applications. I like the names. The marketing team went over the top, but I love it! On the other hand, the names won’t help you, will they? Let’s see what will!

What can it do?

This line has a ton of features, so you can probably find whatever you need for your application. For instance, it has data mobility. With a micro-SD card, you can transfer data from your meter to your laptop to analyze the results.
It also has the “Tube Health Check” function, which can help you avoid unplanned downtime and increase the life of your meter. Of course, they should’ve had that feature out earlier! There is not enough information online as well!
On the other hand, it looks like they pulled out the built-in Ethernet protocol, which sucks. Yeah, digital is the hot new thing, but it’s not the savior of the instrumentation world!

Why should I care?

Good question. A device from the Total Insight line might help on your next application. Of course, as always, you need to decide if the features are worth the price! Moreover, don’t forget to check the type of tube material before you choose your flow meter, as that counts too.
If you just need a simple device, then the Essential will probably work best for you. If you want something great, go for the ULTIMATE! You’ll get more features than you can find on your iPhone! In my not so humble opinion, of course.
In either case, you can have a nice flow meter with good features to improve your plant asset management. Sounds like a win to me!

The benefits of the Heartbeat Technology

The benefits of the Heartbeat Technology

I heard about Heartbeat Technology, but I don't know how to use it and how it'll benefit my process.
Could you explain?

Heartbeat Technology

Expert’s answer:

Heartbeat Technology, a feature for Endress+Hauser flow meters, gives you diagnostics on your meter conditions in a proof test. The diagnostic goes beyond simple status to a report about the actual conditions of the sensor, transmitter, and output. Heartbeat Technology provides three types of data – diagnostic, verification, and monitoring.
The report on the web server basically tells you if the sensor passed or failed the test. If you want more info about the values of the Coriolis coils, for example, you’ll need plant asset management (PAM) software to provide more data or a graphic.

Heartbeat technology

FieldCare, a type of PAM software, will allow you to run the same test on the flow meter, but now you can read the values! The software provides more details than pass/fail, which helps if you need more data or if you want a graphic showing your verification test results.

Most brands on the market offer similar tools to pull data on your flow meter health.
